Recently, I obtained the academic position of research assistant professor at PolyU (Hong Kong Polytechnic University). I should try my best to be an independent researcher. Therefore, I have to figure out a specific research topic from the long-term consideration.
Initially, I am thinking about continuing my current research on 3D LiDAR aided GNSS positioning or GNSS-RTK. However, clearly, this is not a proper direction. On the one hand, the GNSS-RTK is a technology that is part of the navigation or positioning which is not a specific problem or industrial problem to be solved. This will limit your thinking of your long-term research. Therefore, you should think about finding a very long-term practical problem that you wish to solve. For example, you can think about multipath, this is a problem to be solved or need to be solved! This is very important!!
For example, I can think about solve the urban positioning of systems with navigation requirements using low-cost sensors!
The first consideration is the research problem, which is related to the major technical problems and questions that need to be solved in the future. The second consideration is the potential impact of the research results. The third consideration is how much funding is available for this research project. The fourth consideration is how many people are working on this project at your institution and/or at other institutions around the world.
